What did you think about the way it was written? What are Gere’s central claims? While this is a scholarly essay and not a fictional piece, were there any tools in Arguing About Literature that helped you recognize how he constructed his arguments? How does this piece speak to Mauss’ work that we read last week? How does it speak to Grosz from week one? Why “heroism”? What does Gere claim to be “heroic” about effeminacy? Gere is describing primarily the experiences of gay men, how do his claims change when other gender identities are taken into consideration?
