Any topic (writer’s choice)

Part A and B = 450 words minimum (can do more)

Read all of the Dear America Essay Instructions. Yes, they’re long–read them at least twice! Begin to dig up at least 3 outside research sources of your own choosing that help to explain the context for this larger debate. Use    https://libraryguides.chabotcollege.edu/articledatabases

Part A. Write an Outline of your Dear America argumentation analysis essay claims (250 words min.)

I. A paragraph (at least 8-10 sentences) brainstorm on Vargas’ claims breaking down, analyzing, and giving counter arguments on US views & policies on undocumented immigrants. The last sentence must be labelled thesis, and you must state your excellent thesis following my instructions to answer the bold questions directly.

DO NOT give an evasive thesis on topics you’ll cover; you must state the main arguments you cover, and how those arguments reply to other argument. (They Say, I Say method = arguments always respond to other arguments, and you must make clear how Vargas is doing that in his book.)

If you just cover one half of the book, I’ll not give credit for having read the whole book, and it will be incomplete.

II. Vargas’ point #1 (& how it responds to others’ views)

III. Vargas’ point #2 (perhaps on law/policy) (& how it responds to others’ views)

IV. Vargas’ point #3 on Policy (& how it responds to others’ views)

V. Vargas’ point #4 on Policy & how it responds to others’ views) – optional

VI. Analysis section / Research – give us an idea of 3 articles you might use to broaden the context on undocumented immigrants

VII. Conclusion

Part B

1. Brainstorm a few questions you’d like to find out related to the themes Vargas covers

2. Go to Chabot databases and find three articles that you think might answer your different questions

For all three sources,

2A. Give the MLA citation for the article – e.g. author’s name, title of article,  source, date etc.

2B. Skim the first couple pages of the article. What do you think it will be about? Write a brief summary of what you think the author is arguing. Then state how you might use that in your essay.
