Respond to a different group than the one you were assigned. Compare and contrast the information shared in your group with how the ethical standards were explained by the other group.

RE: Discussion 1: Week 3: Group BTop of Form

The first edition of the NASW Code of Ethics was approved in 1960. Since then, the code has been revised and is now the standard for the values and principles that social workers adhere to in their practice (NASW, 2021). Section 4 of the NASW Code of Ethics, Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities as Professionals, has 8 subsections. The first one is competence. This section explains how social workers have the responsibility and should have the intention to stay up to date with relevant knowledge and professional literature so that they can apply it to their practice. The second section of Standard 4 is discrimination. This section states how social workers have the responsibility to not practice themselves, and also not condone, any form of discrimination towards and individual on the basis of, sex, religion, race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, political beliefs, immigration status, or mental or physical ability. Section 3 is private conduct, and this describes how a social worker should not allow their private conduct to interfere with their professional practice. Section 4 is dishonesty, fraud, and deception. This section states that social workers should remain honest and avoid fraud and deception and also not condone it in their place of work. Section 5 is impairment, and this section explains how a social worker should not let their own personal problems interfere with their work and practice. And if a social worker feels as though their personal problems are interfering with their ability and professional conduct, they have the responsibility to seek proper treatment.  Section 6 is misrepresentation. This section explains how social workers have the responsibility to represent the social work profession, the agency they may be employed by, or the organization, in the proper and professional manner. Social workers need to ensure that they are accurately portraying their credentials and qualifications. Section 7 is solicitation, and this section explains that a social worker should not engage in solicitation with clients who may be in vulnerable positions and may be easily influenced. The last section is acknowledging credit, and this section states how social workers have the responsibility to give credit where credit is due. Social workers should properly acknowledge the work of others, and only take credit for their own work (NASW, 2021).

In the preamble of the Code of Ethics, it states how the mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well being and meet the basic needs of all people. In order for social workers to achieve this mission, they need to set aside their own biases and personal differences with individuals. The second section of standard 4 is discrimination and this section explains how social workers the responsibility have to never discriminate an individual based on basically anything (NASW, 2021). An example of a social worker adhering to this ethical standard in their practice would be if they were presented with a client who strongly voiced political beliefs that were the opposite of what the social worker personally believed in. The social worker would need to set aside their own bias and beliefs and treat the client with the same respect and professionalism they would treat any other client with. It’s important for social workers to not take things personally.

By following these guidelines, social workers are able to preserve the dignity and respect of their clients, their employer, and also themselves as professional social workers (NASW, 2021)”

Hello group C,

The purpose of the NASW Code of Ethics is to itemize the core values that that are the root social work. As the NASW Code of Ethics mentions: it does not provide a set of rules that prescribe how social workers should act in all situations; instead, it is more of a guide in how to deal any situation that may come your way ((National Association of Social Workers (NASW) 2021). Being one of the most important tools for a social worker, it should always be referred to whenever situations or obstacles may arise. 

I was assigned ethical standard #3: social workers’ responsibilities in practice settings. There was a lot of attention brought to the fact that one should act within areas of knowledge. Social workers are to make all words, actions, requests, expectations, etc. clear and respectful. Social workers must also have an insightful attention to detail; needing to learn/know your clients and their needs. Confidentiality is a hugely important factor in the code of ethics. A social worker is to always ensure that all are carrying out the NASW Code of Ethics. Social workers have a commitment and obligation to always act with the code of ethics in mind and providing advocacy and resources for those they serve. 

An example of a social worker applying these ethic standards in their practice is ensuring the safety of your client’s privacy. Ways of doing that are taking and keeping detailed and updated notes on clients and keeping them in a secure – most likely locked – spot. Another way to assure the privacy of clients is to be mindful of who, when, where, and why you are discussion any matters regarding your clients.
