They moved  into a tiny apartment with high rent in Tokyo. The Japanese were unused to taking  orders from a woman, especially one who broke cultural norms such as referring to people by their first names, patting customers on the back, and so on. Overall, Kelly was completely unprepared to work in Japan, deal with the Japanese, or be successful in this assignment. There had been no preparations made for Kelly, her husband, or children on employment, schooling, or cultural differences.
