Modern linguistics has largely abandoned prescriptive approaches to language for descriptive ones. However, prescriptivism is still common in popular books on English language use. This work looks at several examples of prescriptive rules found in these books and verifies to what extent modern English usage accords with them via a corpus-based analysis.
