Appendix B- Discussion Evaluation Rubric
Remember that integrating your own thoughts with evidence from the literature is an effective to
demonstrate synthesis and critical analysis. Sometimes a few short direct quotes add value to your
work. But remember that quotes generally serve to share someone else’s thoughts, rather than your analysis.
It is expected that students to follow the rubric.
10 points are possible for each discussion and will be assigned as follows:

2 Complete sentences, well organized, grammatically correct and free of spelling errors (have used spell check to help
ensure this)

2 Initial posting thoroughly addresses all parts of the discussion, is clearly and concisely stated, and demonstrates
that the content was appropriately reviewed, understood, and synthesized. At least two references are
presented for students initial posting.

Provides evidence-based, scholarly resources to support ones position on the posed topic or idea; References for
initial posting are correctly & accurately presented in APA format uses in-text referencing within the posting.

Key points

Chapters 3 & 4 further explicate concepts that were introduced in chapters one and two of your text.
Concepts of person, environment, health, and the professional nurse are added and integrated with concepts discussed earlier.
Communities in rural areas are impacted by policies developed at the national level.
Competition between rural and urban areas in the domain of healthcare occurs increasingly as resources become scarcer.
Healthcare policies impact rural and urban areas in unique ways.
It is important to remember that rural dwellers and rural communities are not all alike. There is much diversity (client, family, nurse, and healthcare system) in rural areas.

Key concepts in the study of rural nursing are introduced by Long and Weinert in chapter one.  These concepts include (p. 6):

The six concepts listed above are explored in chapters 1 – 4 of your text by Winters. Please choose one of the key concepts listed above and explore it more fully, synthesizing with at least one of the topics listed below (these are addressed in the Module 3 assigned readings).
