Answer questions, each question will have around 100 words

1. In Unfinished Lecture on Liberation II, Davis uses The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass to give an account of how the racialized slave system in the 19th century United States structured the positions of both slaves and masters with respect to freedom, understood to be an essential property of human beings.

Briefly explain Daviss account of both positions as it relates to the concrete possibilities and requirements for realizing and expressing this freedom in each case? How and on what level does each party find their freedom constrained?  What possibilities exist for the removal or overcoming of those constraints?

2. In Women and Capitalism, Davis argues that the oppression of women is a social and historical phenomenon which takes different forms depending on other factors conditioning the social form of human productive activity.

Briefly explain how Davis views the development of this relationship between the form of productive activity characteristic of a given society and the way in which womens oppression appears therein.  Then explain why she thinks that it is only under capitalism that womens oppression becomes manifestly social.  Why does she think the situation of black women is a particularly important variation?

3. In section 48 of A Theory of Justice, Rawls rejects the supposition that social goods (such as income, wealth, and education) be distributed based on moral desert.  Why does Rawls reject this correlation between distributive share and moral worthiness?

4. Describe the two main principles of justice that Rawls believes would be agreed to in the original position.  Explain the liberties he includes in the first principle and the equal access clause in the second principle.  Finally, what conditions does Rawls place upon inequalities in the second principlethe difference principle?
