SOC 3780 Sociology of Drug Use Optional Extra Credit Opportunities For the optional extra credit assignments, you may choose to answer up to two of the following questions. Each response should be approximately 2 pages. Your response should be in 12-point font, double-spaced, and in essay form. Cite the sources from which you draw your information. Note that plagiarism will not be tolerated. Each response is worth a maximum of 10 points. Remember that you are allowed a maximum of 20 points for extra credit. These assignments should be submitted on Canvas. A. Locate and watch a movie that deals with issues of substance use/misuse. You should begin the paper with a one paragraph synopsis of the film. While watching the film you should locate examples of THREE of the criminological theories discussed in chapter 4. Note how they were used, defined, made reference to, etc. In other words, you will need to carry me through each example and the connection to that specific theory. In doing so, you should connect the main components of each theory as it relates to the chosen film. B. Locate and watch a documentary that deals with an issue related to substance use/misuse. You should begin the paper with a one paragraph synopsis of the film. Then connect the film to six concepts that you learned about this semester (these concepts could be terms, theories, etc.). More specifically, you should discuss how each concept relates to the film watched, be sure to include appropriate examples from the film to support your connections. C. Choose a relevant course topic that you would like to know more about and engage in some scholarly research. Using Google Scholar or the UNCP online library locate and read three peer-reviewed journal articles on a specific topic. For instance, you could choose to look at marijuana use among adolescents, drug facilitated rape, heroin use among adults, etc. Just make sure that all three articles focus on the same overarching topic. You should then write an essay that includes: a paragraph summary of each article in your own words. This should include a description of the research questions, methods, findings, and implications. Additionally you should provide a conclusion paragraph documenting what you learned regarding the chosen topic.
