Phil 1A Final Argumentative Essay Prompts 1. In some ways, Freud represents a break from Enlightenment notions of subjectivity (Descartes). While Enlightenment thinkers argue that the self is a thing that is within us when we are born and that follows us throughout our lives, Freud argues that the self is something that develops upon encountering the outside world, particularly the immediate familial relationships that make up the Oedipus Complex. Write an essay where you take a position on this debate. Do you agree with Enlightenment thinkers on the nature of the self or do you find Freuds theory of how the subject develops more convincing? Why? Give examples to support your thesis.
