Movie to watch: Half Nelson.

By the end of this activity, you will be able to examine stages of readiness to participate in recovery and to conduct a readiness assessment on Daniel, the main character in the movie, The Half Nelson.

To prepare for this activity, be sure to:

Review and participate in the discussion on signs and symptoms.
Read the Cohen et al. article on assessing readiness for psychiatric rehabilitation.
Based on the video, Half Nelson, write up a Readiness Assessment of the main character, Daniels, current state of readiness to participate in rehabilitation.

You must address each of the five core areas in your readiness assessment.

Need for Change
Commitment to Change
Self-Awareness
Environmental Awareness
Personal Closeness.
Your assessment should include where Daniel is in relation to each these areas in terms of his addictive behavior and a rationale as to why you have rated him on each core area in the way that you did. Be clear in your justification for the ratings you give in each section and be sure to apply your course materials to support your justification. In addition to the video, you should have a minimum of two other sources that support your assessment.

Your assessment should be 2-4 pages double spaced, not including your title and reference pages. Use APA  formatting for all of your citations and for your reference page. Be sure to proof your grammar, spelling, and organization carefully.

Once you have written your readiness assessment, you will submit it to Turnitin.com for feedback using the login information provided by me at the beginning of the term. Make any corrections as indicated by your Turnitin report and submit your paper in the Assignment submission box.

Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer. For those assignments that are not written essays and require uploading images or PowerPoint slides, please follow uploading guidelines provided by your instructor.

Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to submit your work, click Upload Submission.  Enter the submission title and then click on Select a file to upload. Browse your computer, and select your file. Click Open and verify the correct file name has appeared next to Submission File. Click on Continue.  Confirm submission is correct and then click on Accept Submission & Save.

Turnitin

This course has Turnitin fully integrated into the course dropbox. This means that you should only submit your assignments to the dropbox below. Please do not submit your assignment directly to Turnitin.com.   

Once submitted, your assignment will be evaluated by Turnitin automatically.  You will be able to view an Originality Report within minutes of your first submission that will show how much of your work has been identified as similar to other sources such as websites, textbooks, or other student papers.  Use your Originality Report as a learning tool to identify areas of your assignment that you may not have cited appropriately.  You may resubmit your assignment through this dropbox as many times as you need to check to see if you have made improvements, until the due date of the assignment. This assignment will be graded using the Readiness Assessment Rubric located on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module of this course. Please review this rubric prior to beginning your work.  These assignments together are worth 30% of your final course grade.
