A research essay must demonstrate the ability:
x to engage in a detailed and critical analysis of the law relevant to the topic,
x to locate the topic in the relevant social, economic, political, cultural ecological contexts
x to make appropriate comparisons, if relevant,
x and to identify, discuss and analyze core legal concepts that relate to the thesis statement
you are addressing in the essay.
Markers are generally looking for the level of proficiency essays demonstrate in such areas
as:
Focus and structure
Clarity in the definition of the topic;
Conciseness and accuracy in the identification of issues;
Logic and clarity of organizational structure.
Scholarship and Analysis
Use of theoretical and contextual scholarship
Legal analysis;
Evidence of wide ranging independent and thorough research;
Presentation and style
Lucidity of the discussion of the material;
Precision of style guide compliance.
All applicants go through a series of tests that check their level of English and knowledge of formatting styles. The applicant is also required to present a sample of writing to the Evaluation Department. If you wish to find out more about the procedure, check out the whole process.
