Outline for informative speech

Topic : Homelessness in New York

General-purpose

The purpose of the speech is to address the menace regarding homelessness in New York City. The city has many residents living in the streets, which can affect their social and health. The need to have human dignity has led to increased demand for a better living structure to alleviate the challenges being faced by the homelessness in New York City.

Specific purpose

The purpose is to reduce the level of homelessness in New York City. This calls for a better understanding of the situation and having collaborative efforts towards helping the homeless.

Thesis

Homelessness is a significant challenge in New York. Its major causes are existing economic hardship, making individuals unable to afford rent, and increased mental disorder rates (Schreiber & Hartranft, n.d.). Also, substance abuse has contributed to an increased level of homelessness. The significant challenges facing homeless individuals are the inability to afford quality health, socio-economic challenges, and increased chances of suffering from sexual assault.

Main Points

Homelessness poses a significant challenge among the residents of New York. The number of individuals living in shelters is estimated to be sixty thousand (Nunez, 2014). The number living in the streets stand at three thousand. The number is likely to rise because of the massive loss of jobs after the pandemic. Also, there are economic surges that are likely to pose a significant challenge to New York City residents. The resultant effect is an increased rate of homelessness, leading to increased suffering among the affected. There is a need for governing agencies to have concerted efforts that will reduce the menace. There is a close link between the homeless and the poor state of health (Nunez, 2014). The homeless failed to have a health insurance cover that increases their medical liability since they cannot afford the associated premium costs.

Conclusion

Homelessness is one of the key social problems in New York City. The government, with the help of other non-government agencies, should work tirelessly to reduce the levels of homelessness within the city.
