Ms./Mr. Student,

As you may be aware, my firm is in the planning stages of constructing the new Ben Roethlisberger Retirement Center as a parting gift for our friends in Pittsburgh. As part of the earthwork plan, we will have an excess of soil that we hope to use as concrete fine aggregate. We have enclosed a sample of this

sand for testing by your firm. We require the following information from you in a report:

1. Cover page with name and submission date ➢ Signed (electronic signature)

2. A formal cover letter (business style, similar to this letter) with a brief summary of your results including:

➢ Introduction and summarization of this request letter ➢ The loss-by-wash percentage ➢ The material gradation in table form showing percent passing ➢ A full description, in your own words, of BOTH lab procedures as run in lab

3. A discussion section answering these questions, with a note on the ASTM and ASTM section number reference for each answer:

a) Why might your sieve weights not add up to what was poured into the sieve stack? b) At what temperature should the oven be set at to dry material to a constant mass? c) How long should the sieves be in the shaker? d) How far off can the original sample weight into the sieves and the sum of the sieve weights

after sieving be?

e) Why do we use a “guard sieve” & what size sieve is it? f) If my sample has 1” nominal max size rocks, what is the minimum sample size needed

according to C117?

4. A conclusion section summarizing the test results, including if this material meets specification(s) for 2NS.

5. The errors in this letter. There are two that I know of. 6. Finished and COMPLETE calculations, with full worked out calculations for EVERY line, all

columns using the following data:
