According to Edelman & Kudzma (2018), holistic health considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment (p. 333). Holistic healthcare places great emphasis on all elements of the person, mind, body, and spirit as well as examining other influences such as; the environment, relationships, nutrition, and social (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). Thorough communication and the development of a therapeutic relationship is necessary between patient and practitioner to determine what elements of a person or influences is causing the perceived illness. According to Edelman & Kudzmas (2018) research, nurses communicate effectively when they use a person-centered approach or nurse-person relational approach consisting of their being attentive, caring, accepting, empathetic, friendly, comfortable, calm, interested, sincere, and respectful (p. 88). Technology plays a huge role in access to care today. Providers are literally at our fingertips, thus expanding access to care to those who live in rural areas, homebound, or live in areas with fewer Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) providers. Challenges may occur for some with decreased sensory capacity, those who lack technology competence, and do not have to the resources to access to technology (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). The American Nurses Association (2015) Code of Ethics states, the nurse promotes, advocates for, and protect the rights, health, and safety of the patient (ANA, 2015, provision 3). As nurses we have a responsibility to advocate and speak on behalf of our patients’ interest and well-being, to ensure patient safety and improve patient outcomes.
