After reading this assignment, you should start looking for an article on the internet that might interest you. Good examples of publications with thoughtful reviews and analysis include The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Atlantic.

In order to respond to the text, you must first read it and comprehend the author(s) viewpoint, position, or argument. The structure of this essay is very similar to that of your first assignment, the Short Response essay.

The first paragraph of your assignment will be an academic summary/rhetorical precis` that includes the following:
The authors name and relevant credentials (ie: What expertise does the author have to argue the issue?)
The title of the article
A rhetorically accurate verb (see TSIS 40-41) preceding the authors thesis written in YOUR OWN WORDS
An explanation for the reasons and evidence the author uses to support her/his/their thesis
The authors apparent purpose
The authors intended audience
Your Thesis Statementremember that you are writing a rhetorical analysis and not a book report–do you agree with the author’s assessment?
The body of the essay will consist of four paragraphs that reflect your response to the arguments in the article and support your thesis. Think of this essay as an academic conversation between you and the article author. For each body paragraph, you must put forth a clear, arguable topic sentence and support the topic sentence with one correctly formatted (MLA 8th edition) quote or paraphrase from the article.
